The non-profit Shorefast Foundation invited three international architecture offices — Assemble (UK), OFFICE Kersten Geers David Van Severen (Belgium) and Bundschuh Architekten (Berlin) — to design so-called “Small Houses”. These serve as residences for artist-in-residence programmes on Fogo Island.
In an international context, the Shorefast Foundation is regarded as one of the leading institutions in the field of social entrepreneurship. On Fogo Island, in addition to a hotel, it operates several artist residency programmes as well as various local initiatives aimed specifically at the sustainable economic and cultural development of the island.
In collaboration with the artist Thomas Bayrle, we developed a small house whose typology is derived from the idea of stacked timber. This archetypal image, however, is not reproduced at the scale of its immediate reference, but is translated into an abstracted architectural order.
The design thus operates between iconic legibility and typological transformation: the motif of the timber stack is interpreted as a spatial organising principle and translated into a precise structure with its own constructive and formal autonomy.

Die gemeinnützige Shorefast Foundation lud drei internationale Architekturbüros – Assemble (UK), OFFICE Kersten Geers David Van Severen (Belgien) und Bundschuh Architekten (Berlin) – ein, sogenannte „Small Houses“ zu entwerfen. Diese dienen als Wohn- und Arbeitsorte für Artist-in-Residence-Programme auf Fogo Island.
Im internationalen Kontext gilt die Shorefast Foundation als eine der führenden Institutionen im Bereich des Social Entrepreneurship. Auf Fogo Island betreibt sie neben einem Hotel mehrere Künstlerresidenzen sowie verschiedene lokale Initiativen, die gezielt auf eine nachhaltige wirtschaftliche und kulturelle Entwicklung der Insel ausgerichtet sind.
In Zusammenarbeit mit dem Künstler Thomas Bayrle entwickelten wir ein Small House, dessen Typologie aus dem Bild gestapelten Holzes abgeleitet ist. Dieses archetypische Motiv wird jedoch nicht im Maßstab seiner unmittelbaren Referenz reproduziert, sondern in eine abstrahierte architektonische Ordnung übersetzt.
Der Entwurf bewegt sich damit zwischen ikonischer Lesbarkeit und typologischer Transformation: Das Motiv des Holzstapels wird als räumliches Ordnungsprinzip interpretiert und in eine präzise Struktur mit eigener konstruktiver und formaler Autonomie überführt.
